“Ella has been without a doubt one of the most talented singers in Australia this decade” - The Ripe
“Thompson's proficiency as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist is evident across all her pursuits including alt-pop group Dorsal Fins, pop duo GL and her solo work. Thompson's extensive experience allows her to deconstruct musical components into dynamic forms of expression as demonstrated through Like Running Water. The performance pulls apart resonating sounds and reimagines them in reference to the binding imagery of liquid.” - The Music
“Between playing with Mark Ronson, touring the country, winning over every music blog to come across her, and being nominated for a Music Victoria award, Ella Thompson has come around this year as a fashion icon and songwriter extraordinaire. Even as her work with Graeme Pogson in GL continues to thrill, her debut solo record Janus has ideas and energy for days” - Junkee
After taking time to focus on her collaborative projects, Ella Thompson is back with new solo material for the first time since 2015. In the spirit by which she has become known, Thompson presents her energetic songwriting and rich vocalism to introduce a newly empowered approach in her work. By stretching contemporary styles of electronic composition with her unique lyricism and raw delivery, Thompson takes her listeners through a journey toward recognising their own self-perception. Her debut record Janus, named after the two-faced Roman deity of beginnings and duality, is evidence of this. Musically hinting at both the future and the past, her unique take on electro-realism piled in as much optimism as it could muster without forgetting the dose of reality necessary for the current climate.
As a keen collaborator, Thompson recently travelled across the country after being personally invited by Mark Ronson to accompany him on the Australian leg of his ‘Uptown Funk’ tour. Over the last ten years she has also fronted, written and recorded with The Bamboos, electro duo GL and the nine-piece raucous Dorsal Fins. This has given her young career a broad range of experiences, bringing her to festivals from Meredith and Splendour in the Grass in Australia, to Dimensions in Croatia and club shows across the globe.
Thompson is an artist who is always honing her multi-disciplinary craft, moving from production, voice, synthesisers and songwriting, to just recently launching her own label and arts publication POOL, aimed at creating a unique platform for artists to share, unite and intersect. Now, after having developed this new and exciting home for her work, we can expect to see many more creations from Ella Thompson and her network of well-supported peers – for which her latest endeavours will surely be responsible – in the near future.
